Our Story
The concept of a combined sport hub at Takahanga began with the Kaikōura Rugby Football Club. Their vision was to bring whānau together on sport days, starting with netball and rugby playing side by side at Takahanga.
KRFC contributed their earthquake recovery funds to the project, and a subcommittee — known as the Project Team — was formed to bring the idea to life.
As the project developed, it became clear that much more could be achieved for the wider community. The vision grew from a single-club initiative into a sport and recreation hub for all of Kaikōura.
Consultants were engaged to run workshops with local sporting organisations. These sessions laid the foundation for an incorporated society, supported by a shared Vision and Values document and a formal Constitution.
Applications for board membership were then opened under specific criteria.
Today, the Takahanga Sport & Recreation Hub is building relationships and creating opportunities to improve the wellbeing of our community. Guided by vision and energy, the Board is committed to delivering the best outcomes for Kaikōura.
Their role is to support sport and recreation organisations by coordinating and supporting collaboration between clubs and community groups. The Hub aims to increase viability, reduce duplication, and create a more connected sporting and recreational environment for Kaikōura.

Objectives
- To be a visible presence in the Kaikōura community, supporting increased recreation participation opportunities at all levels
- To support member clubs and schools in their endeavours to provide quality sport experiences for their members and for the wider community
- To reinforce Kaikōura’s brand and reputation for excellence in sporting performance
- To increase opportunities for activities, events and social endeavours to continue to grow a sense of community in Kaikōura
- To advocate on behalf of, our clubs and the community, for increased activation of sport and recreation spaces and places throughout Kaikōura
- To honour and follow the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty) by ensuring a strong mana whenua partnership that translates into a culturally relevant emphasis on inclusion, sustainable practice and care of the environment
- To operate, build, develop, manage, lease, retrofit, rent and/or own facilities, infrastructure, and land, in its own right, or on behalf of the Member’s, as agreed and where appropriate support clubs and organisations to do the same
- To support Manaakitangā (making all feel welcome) by ensuring Members and Users (where possible) have an environment that enables access of all persons to sport, education and recreation experiences, and inclusion of our diverse communities
- To work with its key partner Kaikōuraa District Council as a land manager of Takahanga Domain, and Te Runanga O Kaikōura as guardians of the Domain, following the principle of Kaitiakitanga – to protect and conserve for the greater good of everyone and into the future
- Working with partners and stakeholders including RSO’s and RST’s
- Seek funding, manage services, invest and carryout business and social enterprise activity, establish subsidiaries, incorporate, or become a shareholder in companies, or become a member of any society, where it supports the Objects
The Logo Story
The design represents the combined sport and recreation clubs coming together to present a wero or challenge.
The hand is made up of koru shapes, being the clubs and community, holding a patu wahaika.
The figure on the patu represents the tipuna ancestors of Takahanga.
The pattern on the patu is puhoro, representing the ocean waves of our coastline and the speed and power of our players. The puhoro ends in a single koru – a focal point of the sport being played and the combined goal of the community taking part.
