Kaikōura Rugby
Founded in 1888, Kaikōura Rugby Football Club is one of New Zealand’s oldest clubs. For more than 135 years, rugby has been woven into the fabric of our community — developing players, nurturing talent, and uniting generations of families through a shared love of the game. Through world events and changing times, one thing has never shifted: every winter, our fields fill again with the familiar sounds of boots on turf, whistles blowing, and cheers from the sidelines.
Beneath the watchful presence of Takahānga Marae, the Kaikōura Rugby Field feels like hallowed ground. More than just grass and goalposts, it is a gathering place where stories are written in mud and sweat. It is where tamariki take their first runs in oversized jerseys, where parents beam from the sidelines, and where senior players battle it out in front of proud whānau and friends.
On crisp winter mornings, the juniors lead the way — their games filled with smiles, first tackles, and bursts of energy that remind us why we play. By afternoon, the senior sides take to the field, carrying on the power, skill, and traditions that have kept Kaikōura Rugby at the heart of our sporting life for over a century. The sideline atmosphere is unmatched: families huddled in blankets, supporters pacing nervously, and the roar of pride when the home team scores.
Rugby here doesn’t end with the season. In summer, the field comes alive again with touch rugby — fast, fun, and social. These evenings capture the inclusive spirit of our Club, where rugby is about more than the scoreboard; it’s about connection, fitness, and friendship.
What sets Kaikōura Rugby apart is its sense of belonging. The Club has always been about more than the game — it’s about people. Generations have worn the jersey, coached the teams, marked the lines, and worked behind the scenes to keep the tradition alive. Volunteers, sponsors, parents, and supporters all play their part, because this Club belongs to the community — and the community belongs to the Club.

At our core stand four values:
- Heritage — every player who pulls on the Kaikōura jersey carries 135 years of history.
- Whānau — the Club is a home for everyone, whether you’re lacing up your boots or cheering from the sidelines.
- Respect — rugby is built on discipline, fairness, and integrity.
- Growth — developing young players, creating opportunities, and passing the love of the game to the next generation.
Kaikōura Rugby is pride, tradition, and spirit. It is where legends are made and memories are forged. Jerseys, boots, and faces may change — but one thing remains the same: in Kaikōura, rugby is more than just a game. It is our legacy.
Kaikōura Netball Centre
A Court with a View Like No Other
Few places in the world can rival the setting of Kaikōura Netball Centre. The Mainpower Multisport Courts, framed by the Kaikōura ranges and overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean, provide a home for netball unlike any other. It is here that players, coaches, umpires, and whānau gather each week. Not only to compete, but to connect, learn, and grow together.
Kaikōura Netball Centre is more than a place to play. It is a proud part of the Mainland Netball Zone, one of sixteen centres across the region that together support over 20,000 women and girls, 2,000 coaches and umpires, and countless volunteers. Being part of this network means the Centre is linked into a strong system of support, development, and representative pathways. Ensuring that anyone who takes to the court, picks up a whistle, or leads from the sideline has opportunities to grow and succeed.
Here in Kaikōura, the Centre brings together multiple member clubs, each playing a vital role in keeping the game alive and thriving. For newcomers, this means there’s always a pathway in, whether you’re a young player trying netball for the first time, a parent looking for a club for your child, or an adult wanting to return to the game. The Centre acts as the bridge, connecting people with the right opportunities and making sure everyone has a place to belong.
Winter is when the courts truly come alive. From the first whistle of the morning until the last game in the afternoon, the Mainpower Multisport Courts are a hive of activity. Juniors take the court with enthusiasm, seniors battle it out in competitive games, and the sidelines are filled with proud parents, supporters, and volunteers. With the ocean breeze rolling in and the mountains standing tall in the background, there are few sporting venues in the world with a setting this spectacular.
And when the traditional season winds down, the Centre keeps the spirit alive. Twilight Netball, running from January to March, lights up the evenings and makes the game accessible to even more people. Played under the stunning evening sky, it’s a fast, social, and welcoming format that invites everyone to join in, no matter their age or experience.
The vision of Kaikōura Netball Centre aligns with that of the Mainland Zone: to use netball not only as a vehicle to connect and inspire communities, but also as a way to nurture a life-long love of the game. It is about more than competition, it’s about participation, development, and opportunity. Every week, the Centre provides pathways for players, coaches, and umpires, while also celebrating the volunteers and supporters who make it all possible.
As part of the Mainland Zone, Kaikōura Netball Centre also contributes to broader regional outcomes: fostering participation at all levels, building sustainability and capability within the system, and creating development opportunities across governance, coaching, umpiring, and player growth. With close to 25,000 participants across the zone, the network is strong, and Kaikōura is proud to play its part.
What makes this Centre unique, though, is the spirit of Kaikōura itself. Every game is more than just a match; it’s a gathering of whānau, a chance to build confidence, and an opportunity to be part of something bigger. Year by year, the Centre continues to grow, welcoming new players, developing new talent, and strengthening the love for netball in our community.
For Kaikōura Netball Centre, the game is about far more than goals scored. It is about creating belonging, fostering growth, and celebrating the joy of netball. Set in one of the most stunning locations in the world.
